Limestone Coast: Overview Regional Map

Look below the surface and the Limestone Coast reveals its buried treasures. Like 'terra rossa' topsoil. It's said this shallow layer of red earth is the reason the Coonawarra's wines are so exceptional. There are more than 20 cellar doors along this narrow, 14 x 2 kilometre strip. In fact the region is dotted with places where one can disappear and they often make a great base for day trips.

The Naracoorte Caves are another underground treasure. Book a ranger-led cave adventure tour and schedule time for the Wonambi Fossil Centre. It will take you back 200,000 years to when mega-fauna ruled the continent. At the high-tech Bat Teleview Centre, infra-red cameras probe the Bat Cave, the nursery where hordes of bent-wing bats and their babies hang out. Above ground, Naracoorte's Sheep's Back Museum tells the story of the wool industry.

The Limestone Coast has a rich pioneering history. Penola's Mary MacKillop Interpretive Centre, the charming fishing village of Robe, a perfect weekend getaway, or the coastal town of Kingston SE where you can enjoy its famous rock lobster in season. In Mount Gambier an excellent guided tour will take you right down to the famous volcanic crater lake that turns a startling turquoise each November.

Coorong National Park is the place to appreciate the many shore bird species that migrate to this sea of shallow, linked lagoons sheltered from the wild Southern Ocean behind narrow sand dunes.
